wizard!

Look what I got in the mail yesterday!

I can’t tell you how excited I was to receive the assignment to illustrate a portrait of Harry. Not only was it an excuse to watch all the Harry Potter films in two days (“research”), but I just love painting faces. Especially faces with glasses. And Harry has such rad glasses.

My client was the United Church Observer (thanks to Caley Moore, the editor I worked with), and the article (by Lauren Bird) can be found here.

Listening to Harry Potter on audiobook right now as I work. My studio-mate and I have made our way through the first 5 1/2 books over the past few months. I’d never read the books before – I usually catch on to popular trends a few years late (if at all!) – but now I seriously get what all the fuss is about.

And, in case the whole world doesn’t already know, Deathly Hallows 2 comes out in two days! How exciting is that, right?? The books are, of course, so much better. But Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley: so great!

Well, I thought I’d share a recent painting with you, on this lovely Friday evening. She hasn’t been framed or signed yet, but that will come. Blonde-haired persons don’t often make their way onto my canvas, so I was pleased when this one did! I like her.

Other people call him beard face is a 4×4 inch oil painting framed in a diamond-shaped gold frame.

I submitted this painting to an art auction fundraiser for relief efforts in Japan. You guys, the current bid is at $0.99. So you could have this painting for seriously cheap! Also wouldn’t it be nice to donate more than $0.99 a really worthwhile cause?

Find out more about the fundraiser here!

Here is a commissioned portrait I just finished for Kyra and her Fischer. Fischer was named after the greatest character in the greatest Wes Anderson film ever (If you don’t know which one I’m talking about… I am sorry for you). So it was fitting that a portrait of Fischer was initially inspired by this delightfully awkward family portrait.

My favorite bit in the painting is that soft pinky colour of Fischer’s tongue. So pretty!

oh this time of year

Hey, new illustration! This is an ode to how I feel about the current season. While beautiful and all flowery, this spring been colder and blustery-er than usual. Lame. I won’t be satisfied until it’s 35 degrees and we’re all melting in our own sweat.

You can click on the image to see it a bit larger. Also, it’s for sale. Email me for pricing and details if interested!

Every day I spend like 20 minutes at the window, wondering at how quickly these little guys grow. Isn’t it amazing?!

I recently had the honour of creating portraits of this awesome family. Seriously, I love painting portraits. And these faces were no exception.

Aren’t they great?!

I’ve admired Milt Kobayashi’s work before. This painting is one he did as a demo at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. Click on the picture and you can see the painting super-zoomed-in. Check out the fat white paint on her shoulder, and the thin brushy underpainting of her hair.

Love it love it love it.
